This disc was recorded in April of 2002 at St. Cyprians in the UK. This is the third volume of the St. Cyprians project which is led by British avant/jazz piano legend Howard Riley. The two previous St. Cyprian volumes featured a quartet with Larry Stabbins and Mark Sanders, both of whom are not present for this one. Added to the fine duo of Riley and Wren is the great improvising string wizard Phil Wachsmann. This date is often intense, spirited and consistently engaging. Mr. Riley plays inside the piano muting notes and banging on the strings with objects of some sort from time to time. The members of this trio take their time to explore both sparse and agitated terrain, balancing nicely between the two extremes. Certain moments bristle with intensity with both string players bowing or plucking or twisting notes from their respective instruments. This is a solid collective effort with little actual soloing yet the interaction between all three remains fascinating throughout. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
