Merle Bennett - drums
Torsten Papenheim - guitar

"The stripped down packaging of this CD is the perfect complement to the music by this Berlin-based duet. With just guitar and drums, these two present compositions that distill popbased music to its barest forms while referencing both free improv vocabulary and even hints of Jazzguitar sonorities. Implied changes, hanging chords, and wafts of guitar lines play off of shimmering cymbals, fluttering brushes and sticks on a snare, crumples, scrapes, and thudding toms. The duo creates a type of meta-music; pieces that reference and deconstruct song forms. While themes and melodies are hinted at, they disappear like phantasms forming bewitching shadows. The essences of Blues and rock are juxtaposed and filtered performs through spare timbres and desiccated textures with the formal sensibilities of collective improvisation. The eight pieces float by, toying with pulse-based momentum, the muted details of electro-acoustics, and intimate dialogs. This is an area that is increasingly being explored by artists like Martin Siewert and Radian but these two manage to capture a unique take on it. Though certainly not in any of the camps mostly covered in this magazine, Bennett and Papenheim have put together a release that is well worth checking out by adventurous listeners."
