  • 1. Doom and Promise (51:31)

MURAL consists of Australian windplayer Jim Denley with Norwegians Kim Myhr (guitar) and Ingar Zach (percussion).
They first performed in 2007 in Madrid, and have made concerts around the world since.

Live at the Rothko Chapel is the documentation of the special relationship MURAL has to the Rothko chapel. The Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas was inaugurated in 1971 and is one of the twentieth century's most significant attempts of integrating art and architecture with the chapel's octagonal shape and fourteen large panels. Rothko Chapel also has a musical history; Morton Feldman wrote the piece 'Rothko Chapel' for the inauguration in 1971. In the piece on this CD called "doom and promise", MURAL captures both a heavy gravity as well as a touching lightness, like an everchanging dance within the tension of opposites.
"It's a spellbinding listen, and, as its title implies, full of the 'tension between doom and promise' Rothko intended the visitors to his chapel to feel" THE WIRE, Dan Warburton
