In the early part of 1995 The Kreutzer String Quartet commissioned me to write a pieces for 'Piano Quintet'
The premiere being in Nottingham in October of that year.

Subsequent performances included the Bath festival (recorded for BBC Radio 3 ), the Dartington International Summer school, The Banlieues Bleues Festival in Paris 1997 and The Groningen Festival, in Holland.
At last in the year of 2000 we were able to commit the music to recording and CD.

Three of the original quartet are on this recording, although no longer the Kreutzer quartet.

The piece is about 95% notated, and directed. As a jazz/improvising musician I have built within the architecture a section for collective improvisation (Spontaneous composition).
The listener can decide where they think that might be!
With this compositional approach it enables the musicians to be creator as well as curator, and what incredible musicians these string players are. Along with with maestro Daryl Runswick (whose ears were indispensable in the studio) i thank them from the bottom of my heart. A big thank you also to Martha for her very special contribution.
