Andrew Button - guitar
Andrew Woolf - tenor saxophone
Dave Manington - bass
Jonathan Ormston - drums

The first album by this band has leader Andrew Button on guitar, Andrew Woolf on tenor saxophone, Dave Manington on bass and Jonathan Ormston on drums. Button wrote all the songs.

The mood is laid back for the most part and a touch whimsical on Clock Or Candle, a little more circus-like on Dappled – I can almost see the clowns chasing each other round the ring and falling over buckets of water – while Control feels most like the band’s heartland. The improvisations stem more from song forms than from jazz heads, and there is a certain English lyricism to the tunes.

Button can “scronk” like Sco’ when he wants to, or take on a wry, shy, smiling Frisell twang tone, but mainly he keeps things fairly straight and melodic. The two Andrews clearly have a rapport which helps them through long, loping harmony sections or setting up parallel commenting lines to each other’s solos. Manington and Ormston are similarly relaxed and swing with ease.
An unpretentious band making accessible modern British instrumental jazz.
